The SBCA 2009 Award Program recognizes the top 5% of small businesses throughout the country. Using consumer feedback, the SBCA identifies companies that we believe have demonstrated what makes small businesses a vital part of the American economy. Family steel business reaching 30-year anniversary

When Rich Schick, Chief Financial Officer for Fabco Steel Fabrication in Fontana, needs a little advice he doesn’t hesitate to call his father, John. That’s because John Schick’s interest in the success of Fabco Steel Fabrication is more than passing. He founded the company in 1979. Rich took over in 2000.
“A lot of second-generation companies fail because the kids don’t care about it,” Rich Schick said. “They think they’re too smart to ask for advice.”
The company is a couple weeks shy of its 30-year anniversary.
“My dad is the smartest person ‘I’ve ever met in my life,” Rich Schick said. “He went from janitor to somebody who started with $20,000 and built a million-dollar company.”
When Rich Schick took the reins, he immediately started expanding.
“The reason we have grown is because we adapt to what customers need,” Schick said. “We don’t have one industry we rely upon. We have multiple industries.”
Fabco Steel Fabrication employees have done work for trucking companies, other steel fabrication companies, high schools, casinos and even the United States/Mexico border fence.
And as the customer list grew, so did the company’s space needs. Rich Schick began purchasing plots of land above the current property to increase the size of the building where the steel is fabricated. Schick also acts as a landlord to a neighboring company.
They’re currently at nine acres.
The variety of industries that require Fabco Steel Fabrication’s steel services has helped keep the company afloat even during economic uncertainty.
“We’re the busiest when the economy is bad,” said John Schick. “The reason for that is because we always give good products at a fair price and have it done on time.”
Shearing, forming, stamping, rolling, punching, burning, welding and specialty fabrication all are on the list of services offered by Fabco.
Smaller operations depend on Fabco’s flexibility, bringing their own steel to the Fontana company, Rich Schick said.
“When the economy was bad the other guys couldn’t always do it, so we would take the work,” John Schick said.
EB Dyer & Son Welding in El Monte is a smaller, family-owned fabrication company that has sent work to Fabco in the past.
“It depends on what comes in through us, but anything that we can’t handle then we might farm it out to them,” said Bradley Dyer, owner of EB Dyer. “They’ll do one part and I’ll get it back from them and then we have a lot of welding to do.”
Most of the Fabco Steel Fabrication’s employees are long-time veterans of the company, and some have worked there for more than 20 years. A true family affair, Rich Schick’s brother, Doug, and wife, Cheryl, are also employed with the family business.
Rich Schick points out that his father, John, grew up with the fathers of some of the company’s employees, and Rich grew up with the employees themselves.
“We consider ourselves a dysfunctional family,” said Rich Schick. “We’ve known each other for so long.”
As Fabco nears its 30-year milestone, it’s the relationships they develop with customers that keep the company’s future looking solid.
Geoff Hosack, maintenance manager for Dalton Trucking in Fontana, would call his 25-year relationship with Fabco “simple.”
“We buy a lot of stuff from them. When we need something made, they make it,” Hosack said. “They never let me down.”
